About this trip

Come if you love the outdoors
This is a confidence-building, flexibly structured workshop for photographers who love the outdoors. Come to shoot, hike and share your work. We'll use your pictures to discuss what contributes to a successful image.

It doesn't matter if you bring a point-and-shoot or a medium-format back. Great images are not about equipment; they're about composition, light, message or perhaps something else.

Enjoy headache-free, pre-scouted locations for sunrise and evening shoots. Take advantage of our off-road walking or hiking recommendations. Sit back and learn during daily, mid-afternoon viewing sessions and then unwind with a group dinner each night.

We will explore the region's most famous attractions including covered bridges, barns, mountains and pastoral landscapes. If you're hankering to experience even more, read below for some great options.

  Sample Itinerary
Day 1 - Thursday
Meet in the conference room for introductions and a slide show to get you in the Vermont state of mind.

Day 2 - Friday
Leave hotel at 5:30am for sunrise at a nearby pond. Depending on the weather, we'll either get soft, mist and fog or lots of pink and blue pastel color. Breakfast at one of the area's famous diners. We then head up to the renowned quarry area of Vermont for private tours in areas normally closed to the public.

After some sightseeing, we'll head to a Sugar Farm to learn about modern maple syrup production process in a charming, rural setting.

Late in the afternoon we'll hike through a park studded with abandoned quarries. This is a spectacular photo opportunity for mirrored reflections of fall colors.

Dinner will be at a lively brewery not far from the hotel.

Day 3 - Saturday
Leave the hotel at 5:30am to fight for tripod space at one of Vermont's most-photographed locations. Following the shoot, we'll breakfast at a small, country store with the best blueberry muffins I've ever tasted. After breakfast, we head up to a giant pond with a nearby stream perfect for photographing brilliant-colored leaves against dark, moss-covered rocks and tumbling waterfalls.

We spend mid-afternoon on a hike where we learn about Vermont's pastoral history. We share work in the evening with pizza and beer.

Day 4 - Sunday
Leave at 5:30am to explore New Hampshire's Cornish Colony. We'll see four covered bridges in very close proximity and then will spend some time in a historic, classic mill town with huge remnants of brick industrial buildings. We'll have breakfast in a storied family-run diner with the best omelets in the state.

You have a choice for the afternoon. You may take a boat ride at a nearby lake, or do a wonderful hike on nearby Mt. Ascutney. In the late afternoon, we head back to the hotel to edit and share work.

Day 5
Check out of the hotel and hit the road by 7am. Today we head south to a fabulous cheese-making farm in one of Vermont's best-preserved towns. After we taste the delicious cheeses, we roam around the town and public properties until the workshop formally ends at 10am.

About Me

  I'm a working professional photographer
I decided to set up my own workshop because I love Vermont in the fall and couldn't find the right group to travel with. I was looking for some good camaraderie, lightly structured photo guidance and like-minded people to share the time with. I also love to share my work and hear what people think of it! If you're anything like me, sign up.

I am a professional photographer in New York City. I specialize in women's portraiture and make a significant portion of my living from stock photography.

I wasn't always this lucky. I worked on Wall Street for many years where I learned a lot about computers and people. When I left the industry, I had no idea that I would end up where I am. If you're one of those people who've always dreamed about making a living doing what you love, this workshop could change your life.

Where to stay
I've reserved a block of rooms at a local hotel.

About the Weather
Vermont's October weather is normally clear, cool and dry. If it's none of the above, I'll still encourage you to go out and shoot so bring gear for cold, wet and windy conditions.

If it's really bad, I'll have plenty of indoor alternatives from charming pubs to Photoshop demonstrations.
